Since the demise of communism across central and Eastern Europe, the
transitional countries have chosen and embarked on very different paths
to the enjoyment of national sovereignty and economic independence. In
South – east Europe, this journey has taken longer than for their northern
neighbours, in part because the countries of the region began from a lower
economic base and without the developed links to the European Union, which
has proved to be so critical in fostering growth.
By 2003, however, the countries of the region had firmly
embarked on political and fiscal perform, laying the foundation for economic
stability, foreign investment, and driving momentum for growth. Prospect for
entry to the EU has a solid core through the opening, or imminent opening, of
negotiations of Stabilisation and Association Agreements.....
